History of the Library

The scientific library of WKU is one of the leading departments of the university, which functions as a center for the dissemination of knowledge, intellectual communication and culture. The main task of the library is full and operational library and information services for students, teaching staff in accordance with their information requests to any library resources. This task is achieved through the active introduction of new forms and methods of work, the creation of their own information resources, the computerization of library processes and the organization of user access to electronic services.

The fund of the Scientific Library is 1 million 059.430 items. storage, more than 6 thousand readers, the number of visits to which is more than 600 thousand, book lending is more than 1 million.Library of the West Kazakhstan University named after M. Utemisova was created from the moment the Ural Pedagogical Institute was founded on the basis of the fund of 7,500 volumes of books of the Orenburg Real School in 1932 and is one of the oldest university libraries in Kazakhstan. The university library has a unique collection of old, rare books dating from the 18-19 centuries. The oldest monument of Old Slavonic writing, the book "The Ostromir Gospel" was rewritten in Russia by deacon Gregory from the Greek original in 1056-1057. The book is named after the Novgorod governor and mayor Ostromirov and was apparently kept in the Novgorodsky, Sophia cathedrals, then ended up in Moscow. Also in the fund of rare books are "Magnitsky's Arithmetic", "Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brothers Granat", "Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron", more than 300 titles of "ZhZL".

The library subscribes about 200 titles of periodicals. Constantly maintains communication with the public, large publishing houses of Russia and Kazakhstan, the Association of universities of Kazakhstan.

The structure of the Scientific Library is made up of 3 departments: the department for acquisition and processing of literature, the department for ensuring reader requests, the department for information technology and bibliography. Library readers are served differentially at 8 lending points: 3 subscriptions and 5 reading rooms, including an electronic reading room.

The scientific library is equipped with modern computer and copy equipment, there is an electronic reading room, where users are provided with video publications, electronic textbooks developed by university scientists, methodological developments, assignments for practical classes, encyclopedias, reference books, educational videos, lecture notes of teachers.

Since 2000, we started to create an electronic catalog in the program "Library 5.2". In 2012, work on the creation of electronic catalog databases was continued in the automated program "IRBIS-64". At the moment, the database contains over 170,000 records. The formation of a full-text base of educational literature and scientific articles of teachers has begun.

Currently, the development of libraries as information centers is inextricably linked with their automation and the introduction of computer technology. In December 2014, special equipment was purchased for the reading rooms of the main building, which makes it possible to increase the efficiency of the library's work with the book fund. The essence of this technology is that the reader, having selected books on the shelf, can independently register them on his electronic library card and read in the reading room.

Due to the introduction of e-learning in universities, the library cannot remain the same. It should offer a range of new services and services to support e-learning.
